198x Olivetti Lettera 36 Serial # n/a 198x Olivetti Lettera 36 typewriter, Serial # n/a Suzanne LaPierre's 198x Olivetti Lettera 36 typewriter. 2025-03-17 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Suzanne LaPierre: 198x Olivetti Lettera 36 Serial # n/a I was excited to find a Lettera 36 in a thrift store for just $9. I spent more on the cord than the typewriter ($10 plus shipping), but sadly when I plugged it in - nada. I think electric typewriters and motor issues are beyond my ability to repair, so I plan to donate this to someone who can bring it back to life. It came with its original black plastic case (not pictured). Couldn't find a serial number. This machine was designed by Ettore Sottsass, who also designed the Valentine typewriter. Update: Donated to New England Typewriter in March, 2025.

I am a librarian, artist, writer, and co-author of the book Desegregation in Northern Virginia Libraries (The History Press, 2023). If I'm working on a book or article for publication, I'm on a computer. However, I use my typewriters to create poems, type-doodles, art, and to write snail mail letters. I find the tactile nature of typing on a manual machine soothing and joyful. Each typewriter seems to have a soul and a story. Currently my collection is centered around midcentury models.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Olivetti Lettera 36 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Olivetti Serial Number page and the Olivetti Lettera 36 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
