Description:
Here we got a Brother AX-15 with Swedish keyboard from 1989 made in Japan. It uses a daisy-wheel as many electrics do which should be interchangeable if I'm not mistaken. I will mention bellow the features I know of if anybody is interested for are new and trying to find some information.
- Line spacing option of 1, 1½ or 2.
- Pitch option between 10p or 12p.
- Margin +/- key and Margin release key.
- Tab +/- key and of course a Tabulator key which jumps to either the set tabs or in intervals of ½ inches from where the write head is by pressing the Tabulator key together with the CODE key.
- RELOC(ATE) will move the write head to the end of the written line. RELOC + CODE acts exactly like backspace.
- INDEX will move the paper one line upwards and REV (INDEX + CODE) will move the paper downwards one line. (A bit confusing but think INDEX moves write head down and REV moves the write head up.)
Backspace is backspace. Backspace + CODE moves the write head to the beginning of the written line.
- WORD OUT and LINE OUT basically means either the erase the entire word or erase the entire line.
- Erase is located to the right side of the space bar and erases just the latest character written. But there are also a feature beneath it a symbol of a green box with a cross/X on it and I cannot figure out what it does so if anybody might have clue please let me know!
Ok now for the black and green lit features at the top.
- RMF (CODE + 3) will move the write head to the right margin of the current line, it will let you write words as far out as the margin. You can use this when you want to line up things neatly in a document, for example: If you have a typewriter collection and you only care for the name and price of it you write the name and model of the typewriter on the left as usual then just press (CODE + 3) and the machine moves you to the right margin to write the price.
- CTR (CODE + 2) does the same thing as RMF but instead of moving the write head to the right margin it moves it to the exact middle between the left and right margin.
- Underline ON (CODE + 4) OFF (CODE + 5) is quite explanatory it just underlines the words you right like titles.
- Auto Return ON (CODE + 7) OFF (CODE + 8) allows you to turn on and of the auto return feature when hitting the end of the line. I like that you can change it depending on what you might be used to.
Then there are two combinations I found interesting marked with a arrow on a line in between to other lines. It will move the paper a half line up (CODE + 9) or down (code + 0). This will let you easily write one character in between the normal line space. It might be a small thing to be considered useful but when you need it you might be happy it is there. When it comes to uses the only one I can come to think of is when writing chemical formulas with the number written half a line down or maybe for mathematical calculations like a number square or to the power of? This make me think of maybe it was tailored towards students but also a simpler every day to day machine.
It has less features than my Brother AX-110 but this typewriter sure feels a lot more sturdy! I really love the look of the AX-15, it might not have all the features you want to see on a electric typewriter but I find it more enjoyable to both look at and to type on. It sort of remind me of early home computers which I also happen to be a fan of. This typewriter will I definitely keep on using! But might keep my eyes out for a model with more features in the future but at the moment I am already very pleased!

Hi my name is Kewin and I'm a 24 years old from Sweden. I have a few hobbies like drawing and playing guitar but I do also like myself some project here and there which is where my interest in typewriters fits in. I have always collected things through my life but I did not expect typewriters to be my next big passion in collecting. I started collecting typewriters in the beginning of 2022 and so far I have 95* of them (4 of which is currently disassembled) . I find it really enjoyable to pickup a typewriter at a thrift store/second hand and starting to clean it up and get it to a working condition to the best of my ability and knowledge. (Excuse all the dog hairs in my pictures, I do actually try to remove the hair before taking the pictures. xD) Cheers!
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Brother AX-15 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Brother Serial Number page and the Brother AX-15 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
