1988 Brother AX-18 Serial # J81520918 1988 Brother AX-18 typewriter, Serial # J81520918 Daniel Burgoyne's 1988 Brother AX-18 typewriter. 2026-03-30 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Daniel Burgoyne: 1988 Brother AX-18 Serial # J81520918 Local Thriftshop C$3.99 purchase, it came with a full carbon film ribbon and a Prestige 1012 wheel.

This is the first time I get a thrifted typewriter that has NO Liquid Paper spots anywhere. The machine is in great condition. The thrift store staff could not figure out what was wrong with it, so they discounted the price heavily. I just lifted the lid and found the two spools of correcting ribbon on the left side, preventing the zeroing/reset of the carrier. Et voilà!

This model has the Canada bilingual keyboard layout, an adjustable paper guide, a paper bail and, a paper rest. It's more responsive to the touch than the more recent Brother electronic models I have had the opportunity to type on (the slowest being the GX-6750). There is no perceived delay.

This model has a power cord storage compartment, although I am not sure how long it will continue to work without breaking the door.

Bonjour! I am from the region of Montreal, Quebec and moved to Ottawa, Ontario in 1992.

Amateur watchmaker and machinist, I love anything mechanical, hydraulic or electric. I have restored American and Canadian clocks and small lathes, milling machines and a jig bore.

Most of my typewriters have French Canadian QWERTY keyboards, with some exception for rare finds.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Brother AX-18 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Brother Serial Number page and the Brother AX-18 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
