1986 Smith Corona XD 6500 Serial # 5LEG 1142195 1986 Smith Corona XD 6500 typewriter, Serial # 5LEG 1142195 David Richman's 1986 Smith Corona XD 6500 typewriter. 2025-11-21 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of David Richman: 1986 Smith Corona XD 6500 Serial # 5LEG 1142195 I picked this up from a Goodwill, it was only $10 but that doesn't make the machine any good. Doing some research on this machine I found a magazine from 1986, advertising it. there is also a date code next to the serial number, mine say's Aug 8634. I like how it types better then the other Daisywheel typewriters I have used, and the screen is a nice touch. the spellcheck it has is not the greatest but its like 40 years old so ill give it a break. On this specific example I have had some issues getting it to work, like one of the Capacitor just fell out and I had to put it back because the machine stopped working without it. Also the mechanism that advanced the ink is not working for some reason, and I don't know why yet.
Ps, I found a way to print with this machine without using ink.

In the bottom left there's a tag mentioning a demo, I used it and it was surprisingly advanced, the machine just tells you what it dose, and then askes you to get a Sale's person for more info... a bit of an oversight if you ask me.

Cool little Smith Corona badge, also the knob above it controls the keyboard for some reason.

The second one to the left is the little bugger that fell out.

So apparently transfer paper is this machine's only way of printing text, so I used some to print the demo, Here's the demo.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Smith Corona XD 6500 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Smith Corona Serial Number page and the Smith Corona XD 6500 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
