Description:
I wanted a usable portable and found this on eBay at a reasonable price. It looked immaculate (apart from one paint chip) and the guy said it worked well.
When it arrived it appeared to be in almost new condition. After a little while playing the reason became apparent. The %? slug was so low these characters came out like subscripts. It looked like a manufacturing fault. I'm guessing nobody used this thing for the last 40 years because they couldn't type a question! Perhaps it was a returned machine? I'd certainly have sent it back if I had bought it new.
After an evening with a brazing iron and some solder I have repositioned the slug. A fiddly business indeed! It seems to be working fine now. If anything it feels like it needs to be warn in a bit.
I'm guessing this is a very late model as the serial is high and there is a stamp saying "86" which might be the year.

I've caught the typewriter bug from somewhere recently. I think it may have been a long running exhibition at the museum here in Edinburgh. Generally I have a desire to be more analogue.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Olympia Traveller de Luxe S on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Olympia Serial Number page and the Olympia Traveller de Luxe S By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
