Description:
Bilingual Japanese-English Canon Typestar Variant with shared hardware, cases, ribbons, interface.
Full English typewriter and Japanese word processor capability. Hiragana, katakana, kanji, gaiji (user-designed characters), and a snappy typer-like typeface (stretchable) for English and European languages. Full suite of diacritics for French, German, Italian, etc.
First and only 24E I've heard of or seen. Came in original box, without packing other than the flimsy plastic wrap, no user manual or formed plastic case (add these to my grail list). Works great in spite of a bit of scuffing over the past 31 years. My new fave! 12-character LED display instead of 8 - everything else appears the same as the PEN24. Prints on demand without ribbon on thermal paper or with ribbon on smooth papers like LIFE Typewriter Paper etc. Star-struck!!
About 1 1/2 full pages of memory (I will test and report, comparing with PEN24); no output options other than print and erase. There is some clipboard memory (though Canon doesn't call it that) but not sure if this is in addition to the regular memory or not. Retains current work when powered off. 24-dot printout looks pretty typer-like - enough to satisfy my profs at UofT back in the day for essays and such at least!

Sphinx of black quartz, judge my vow.
From Toronto Canada. Tokyo-based entrepreneur since 1998 and meditation teacher since 2000. Learned to type in Grade 9 following mind-altering lunches and still experience flashbacks while typing. Mother did shorthand and typed 90 wpm as stenographer, dad pecked out haiku on his old typewriter as long as I remember. Moved to thermal printing, 8-character display CanoWord Pen 24 in 1986 when my typewriter broke, then to FujiXerox, Mac and iPhone. Bought my first typewriter of the new millennium (a Lettera 32) in March 2015. Muscle memory has graduated to neural reboot--every moment at the typewriter brings back fresh memories of type-happy childhood and visions of literary grandeur. Use typewriter for inspiration/rough drafts and computer/iPhone (Scrivener/Evernote) for polishing.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Canon CanoWord PEN24E on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Canon Serial Number page and the Canon CanoWord PEN24E By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
