1985 IBM Wheelwriter 3 Serial # 6746-11-0587582 1985 IBM Wheelwriter 3 typewriter, Serial # 6746-11-0587582 David Richman's 1985 IBM Wheelwriter 3 typewriter. 2026-06-04 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of David Richman: 1985 IBM Wheelwriter 3 Serial # 6746-11-0587582 This thing is a behemoth, I've heard of the IBM Wheelwriter for a few years now mainly in the vintage computing space because of its keyboard. Back in the 70s and 80s when Personal computers were becoming a think, keyboards to plug into these computers were needed. IBM constructed what is called a spring buckle keyboard with dose something with the springs bukling I suppose? Anywho, this typwriter has one and its fantastic. From the research I did online the wheelwriter 3 was the budget lineup of the wheelwriters, you can see some poverty panels on the back where I'm assuming other ports and stuff so you can plug this thing into a computer would have been if this was any other model but the 3. One thing I would like to mention is the foam sealant or whatever that they use for the levers on the right side of the machine. They disintegrate after like 4 decades and that stuff powderizes and just gets everywhere.
O, one thing I forgot to mention was the planten on this machine can come out easily which is a feature that I like a lot. On either side of the platen there are these plastic tabs which seem like they would break if you squeeze them but apparently not, you just have to squeeze them and pull the thing out.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the IBM Wheelwriter 3 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the IBM Serial Number page and the IBM Wheelwriter 3 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
