1983 IBM Personal Typewriter Serial # 6126 110031219 1983 IBM Personal Typewriter typewriter, Serial # 6126 110031219 Ted Munk's 1983 IBM Personal Typewriter typewriter. 2018-10-24 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Ted Munk: 1983 IBM Personal Typewriter Serial # 6126 110031219 The IBM "Personal Typewriter" Selectric Model 851 is basically a Single-Pitch Correcting Selectric II mechanically, and takes the 88-Character type elements used in SI's and SII's, but uses Selectric III "Bicycle" carbon ribbons - all stuffed into the size format of an 11" Selectric I. They were made *after* IBM discontinued the Selectric II (IE: produced concurrently with the SIII), and are fairly rare. If they only had dual-pitch and the SI’s curvy scalloped body, it would be the PERFECT Selectric.

This one is called "The Green Hornet", and is 12 Pitch only, although it does have 1-1.5-2 linespace setting.

Datestamped "82" on ribbon cover.

Urgh, the tapes were a mess and I needed to find a replacement tilt tape. Luckily, the tapes from an 11" Selectric 721 work in this machine just fine.

These machines are invariably this whitish color, lighter than the Beige that IBM used for factory repaints. The machine screams for a more interesting paint job, don't you think?

There we go, Black and Green. Now that's a sharp-looking machine. You can even forgive it for not having the rounded lines of the 700 series.

Hmmn, need to touch up just above the margin scale.

I'm thinking it wouldn't be too hard to mount a green LED inside the ribbon cover so green light shines out of the margin-set gap.

I am a scoundrel without a cause, and my swank outshines the sun.

I am a casual Typewriter Hunter residing in the sweltering deserts of Arizona with a wife, three cats and about 50 typewriters. My main hunting ground is thrift stores, and I rarely pay more than $10 for a machine. My collection consists mainly of portables with cases, and they stay in the cases unless I am actively using it (usually more than one at a time). I do, however keep a handful of interesting Selectrics, including a Composer and a couple of large Nakajima Electronics to use as daisywheel printers for my vintage laptop collection.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the IBM Personal Typewriter on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the IBM Serial Number page and the IBM Personal Typewriter By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
