Description:
Local find for a good price in working condition. A few easy fixes off the bat (ribbon was a tangled mess because missing spool nuts and ribbon cover) and cleaning off some of the gross greasy knots of eraser shavings got it typing just fine. A little too soft to the touch for my preferences, and backspace is in the "wrong" spot compared to my daily keyboard, but a robust metal machine (made in Spain) in a plastic skin and not a bad lap-typer. I appreciate all the line-spacing options, pretty good balance of other features. Cheerful pica type is easy on the eyes. Would like to do a more thorough clean and some minor repairs eventually: Spools don't always sit happily (goldilocks requirements on tightening the spool nuts), and a lot of the rubber washers and components have become hard and distorted (would like to replace).

As a writer, I've always longed for a typewriter of my own; someone recently indulged me and I was gifted a Smith-Corona 4S. (His name is Franklin, and he is cranky, but stunning.) This was apparently the push I needed (or maybe didn't need) as, only months later, I found myself with five typewriters and zero desk surface area.
I'm a designer, historian, and teacher by trade, but by night, I sit on the floor (see aforementioned obsolete desk space) of a tiny apartment and carefully draw diagrams so I don't forget where any of my loose screws belong.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood 319 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood 319 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
