Description:
The Underwood 314 was purchased at a flea market in NE Philly for $15. It is in great condition. It smelled a little moldy, but a good wiping down and change of ribbon took care of that.
It took a lot of research, but I have concluded that this is likely an Olivetti Lettera 31 (Dora). It looks suspiciously similar to the 1968 model. However, according to the database, the serial number falls between 1972 and 1973. Another hunter had a similar issue identifying his typewriter. Lucky for him the nameplate fell off and under it was the Olivetti name. I have not removed the nameplate on mine.
The vinyl case is original. The typewriter has a nifty lever/carriage return that folds back for storage. It types nicely, although I still prefer my Underwood 6 of all my machines. This one tends to slide ahead a few spaces if I type to quickly.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood 314 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood 314 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
