197X Sears Communicator Serial # S8L126577M 197X Sears Communicator typewriter, Serial # S8L126577M James Grooms's 197X Sears Communicator typewriter. 2025-01-02 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of James Grooms: 197X Sears Communicator Serial # S8L126577M These are Smith Corona 2200s in a metal housing vs the plastic one used on the S-Cs. First introduced in 1975 featuring the cartridge system that came out on the S-Cs in 1973. This is an early one because it has the familiar two V-belt drive system. Later 2200s have the one toothed belt drive.

Adding to the sales dominance of the Smith Corona electrics, who knows how many were sold through Sears. The belts quit and with no replacements available, thousands are sitting in landfills.

Throw a carbon ribbon in one and they are fine machines producing an excellent type impression. MSRP was $270 or $1600 today. They were not the budget model they are often mistaken for. I believe the later ones lost the paper injector and were budgeted down similar to how the XL Coronet replaced the 2200 into the 80s.

This one should pass the type test after a basic service and maybe some O-rings to replace the belts. No case.
---------------------------
Still running the OE V-belts. Type sample top line is nylon and remainder with a carbon film. She saw some use by the wear patterns and a healthy dose of various grades of whiteout. The right shift lever link was bent, so the shift would stick down. A simple fix that probably led to a forced retirement.

As with many, the bug is back there somewhere due to an Underwood No. 5. My grandfather was on a small town school board and used one for this. My parents had a yellow Royal Safari that I used to index card everything, including a beer can collection. Collection syndrome clue! The long dormant tic was activated when my neighbors left a Remington Quiet Riter on the curb when they moved in circa 2010, Yes a believe it or not story is next, when a Hermes 3000 comes home with the girlfriend from work for free. Yes, free! From there the addiction is full steam. And yes, I now have a No. 5. Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose.
