197X Royal 1200 Electric Serial # 2718321 197X Royal 1200 Electric typewriter, Serial # 2718321 Kyle Oelofse's 197X Royal 1200 Electric typewriter. 2018-02-22 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Kyle Oelofse: 197X Royal 1200 Electric Serial # 2718321 The Royal 1200 Electric is, obviously, an electric typewriter. Unlike electronic typewriters, this machine still has plenty of manual functions. From what I can tell, only shifting and typebar actuation are electrified. The carriage return, spacing, backspacing, etc... are all manually powered. Per Ted Munk, this machine is identical to the Royal Apollo 10.

Readings on the Internet about other electric machines indicate that their motors are usually a little noisy while they're powered and idling, but that's not the case with this one. In fact I thought it was broken when I first gave it power, when it was actually working whisper quiet! If you're looking for a dead silent machine with electric typebars, find one of these Royal machines.

This typewriter currently has no other photos yet and the "197X" is a best guess based on the style and available technology of the time.

I inherited two Royal KMMs as a kid. Over a decade later I started actively collecting and repairing in 2015 shortly after discovering the existence of "weird" typewriters like the Blickensderfer and Hammond, and finding a destroyed Super Sterling to experiment on.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Royal 1200 Electric on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Royal Serial Number page and the Royal 1200 Electric By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
