1978 Olympia Monica de Luxe Serial # 5349842 1978 Olympia Monica de Luxe typewriter, Serial # 5349842 Daniel Burgoyne's 1978 Olympia Monica de Luxe typewriter. 2023-01-25 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Daniel Burgoyne: 1978 Olympia Monica de Luxe Serial # 5349842 The Monica de Luxe has a spring-loaded transparent line guide, a tabulator function with a "clear all tabs" lever located towards the back right side and a sensitive touch adjustment on the left in front of the ribbon spool. It's a QWERTY French Canadian keyboard layout. Weighs 7.6 kg or 16 lbs 12 oz with cover for transport.

It looks similar to an SM9 model but in a plastic body with a molded cover to form a compact portable machine.

Built in the United Kingdom. Weirdly, some of the small screws are British Association (BA) sizes.

This machine has a Script typeface in 12 cpi, yes, not the 11 cpi (2.3 mm) pitch of other Script Olympias.

Quite the unicorn as witnessed by its rarity on this database.

The key action is snappy and the platen is still soft. Has a quirky problem with the = key when segment is shifted first, but not if the = key is lightly pressed first, and the SHIFT key is pressed next and then the = key is pressed all the way down.

It is missing the back paper rest; a weakness of the design.

Bonjour! I am from the region of Montreal, Quebec and moved to Ottawa, Ontario in 1992.

Amateur watchmaker and machinist, I love anything mechanical, hydraulic or electric. I have restored American and Canadian clocks and small lathes, milling machines and a jig bore.

Most of my typewriters have French Canadian QWERTY keyboards, with some exception for rare finds.
