Description:
New for 1976. Initially, they don't mention correction ribbons in ads. By late 77, they start featuring this. So there is some info on when these, now dreaded ribbons, started to be sold.
This model doesn't appear to ever feature Correction on the face plate like the L10, which goes both ways. This XL-20 has a paper injector and a check protection key. I believe these are the two things that make it different from the L-10 model.
The articulating forward cover is a nod to Smith Corona. You have to wonder if Brother had a laugh at that one. The Sears versions of this have gull-wing ribbon doors. It does not appear that Brother ever had a model with this?

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to any one area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Brother Cassette Electric XL-20 Plus 3 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Brother Serial Number page and the Brother Cassette Electric XL-20 Plus 3 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
