1977 Olympia SM9 Serial # 5338494 1977 Olympia SM9 typewriter, Serial # 5338494 Plante and Doole-Fisher Typewriters's 1977 Olympia SM9 typewriter. 2018-05-10 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Plante and Doole-Fisher Typewriters: 1977 Olympia SM9 Serial # 5338494 This acquisition was made in rather depleted condition through Craigslist in March of 2018. The typewriter had an overal rather saddening condition as it seemingly had been left outside for a brief but impacting period of time. The machine contained vegetation as well as a rather profound layer of dirt. Uncanny though, is the fact that it has remained rather rust-free throughout this ordeal. There is spot-corrosion in a few hidden areas, which in no way is debilitating it's overall functional and cosmetic performance.
Even though this mark SM-9 has been considered to be the lowest quality SM-series model to have been produced, a notion I could agree with, regardless of this opinion I find that this machine still has the true Olympia spirit within it's structure and even though the platen-knobs were somewhat universally used in the years of diminishing popularity for manual typewriters, (which was considered one of the iconic indications that made this model the cheaper equivalent) I still have to say that profound enjoyment can be acquired using this machine. It still has a strong overall feel, which other machines of this same era often lack.
This machine has minor rust on the paper-support slot, as well as some spotting on the main body. However, the mechanism has slid through the torments of Mother Nature unscathed. Besides some minor paint marks on the cover (scratches and nicks) this typewriter came out surprisingly nicely, considering the condition I found it in was mildly put "questionable".
