Description:
The last generation of the Baby also deserves its share of attention. Maybe not as iconic as the little vermin that basically set the pattern to be followed by every ultra-portable. After more than 4 decades the Baby was still alive and kicking, always keeping the notorious quality (and pickiness) of the Hermes Brand. A nice one to type with, this little lightweight legend, is well suited to domestic use, and in case of emergency it can deliver several pages in a row with less effort than one could expect from such a small typewriter.
This specimen has a little story behind. It was sold by a woman who wanted this lovely machine to be on a desk, ready to type, but things did not go as expected and sadly the typewriter was left waiting for better times. And there I was. What caught my eye was the beautiful script typeface, and the story came as a bonus. The best I could do was to take the Baby home and give it a task (and BTW obtaining a good typeface sample): translating an article from the Kansas University about a tympanum from the 16th century on display at the Spencer Museum of Art which went there from Santa MarĂa de la Armedilla, a monastery now in ruins in my village. I must say I'm glad it ended up in a place where it's appreciated, and if I don't get to see it, I'd lmuch appreciate that someone shared a photo of it.

The first typewriter I saw was my grandpa´s Olivetti Linea 98 at the office. It was just a curio for me. Then I was given a Nakajima, which I didn´t use and my grandfather took it from me because it was easier to handle than the bulky Linea 98. Now I own that typewriter, and I started a little collection in Valladolid, Spain. The Nakajima, which is "my" typewriter only returned home in 2017, almost 20 years later, when he wanted a better typewriter.
A collection that started small grew into something bigger, a nuisace for my family and a great source of satisfaction for me.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Hermes Baby on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Hermes Serial Number page and the Hermes Baby By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
