1977 Brother 3112 Serial # L71801596 1977 Brother 3112 typewriter, Serial # L71801596 Erwin vanD's 1977 Brother 3112 typewriter. 2025-04-29 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Erwin vanD: 1977 Brother 3112 Serial # L71801596 When I found this machine online, the first step was to look at TWDB of course.
I couldn’t find one, just some similar models registered with and without the addition ā€œElectricĀØ followed by the model number.
The closest one was the machine from Geoff Flash ā€œBrother Electric 3012ā€.
I’ve put a link below to his gallery.
His machine looked more like an JP-8 model as shown in the S/N list, but is not a fully electric typebar.
This model ā€œ3012ā€ has a body that has rounded corners at the front of the typebar.

My model ā€œ3112ā€ has a rectangular bodystyle, and when looking at the S/N list, it looked more like the manual JP-5/JP-7 model.
This machine has a 9 digit S/N , others only have 8.
There is a model JP-6 electric typebar mentioned, but there is no image or serial number listed.

Looking some more with the model number, an E-bay listing popped up.
This turned out to be a Brother "Profile Electric 12ā€, the same model but with different decals. With this information I went back here and yes, there was one registered.
Again a machine from Geoff Flash, and on a picture with the identification label it says ā€œModel 3112ā€. I’ve put a link to this gallery below as well.

There is also a Brother "Brother Electric 4612" registered here , with the same rectangular body style,
see link below, that also has a 9 digit S/N. It might be related also.

I have registered this machine as a model ā€œ3112ā€ without the addition ā€œElectricā€, like others have done,
because I think it’s the best way to identify this model in TWDB.

I also think it might be the missing JP-6 from the serial number database,
but I’m not sure, I leave that up to the experts.

This machine looks like it went to the tanning salon on a weekly basis.
Completely changed in color over the years turned into a beige color, key inlays included.
It didn’t operate and I am also not a master of ten finger blind typing, so the first thing I had to do was look at why it didn’t function and get the stickers off.
It turned out that the keys were pressed too hard and the metal leaf springs behind them were stuck. I’ve taken the whole bar out,
cleaned the oxidation off and gently bent some of them back to their original shape. After that, this machine started working as it is supposed to do.
Just a little misalignment when using Capitals, it seems that the carriage is not fully returning to its lower position, like something is stuck underneath.

It has a manual carriage return, but a power backspace with a repeat that sounds like
the repetitive sound of an old machine gun.
Manual spacer and repeat spacer
Power Shift, lifting the carriage.
Lever to adjust key sensitivity
Fixed tabs?

Regular DIN 2103 Spools didn’t fit, one original was broken.
Some modifications made the DIN 2103 fit as well.

Hello,
Typerwriterfan from the Netherlands, recently bought a few typewriters again and started cleaning and adjusting them.
I haven't touched a typewriter in a long time, but it's fun working with them again.
This is a great database and I will try to contribute too.

Have a nice day,

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Brother 3112 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Brother Serial Number page and the Brother 3112 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
