Description:
The Kovac M-102 is an off-brand of the Sears Manual 1, which I previously thought to be made for only one year, 1974. Sears has an ad showing "Sears Manual 1" in its Fall 1974 catalog. That is not the case since Kovac M-102's serial number starts with a 6 which would indicate it being manufactured sometime in 1976 according to TWDB's Nakajima date code system. I'm going to take a wild guess that the Kovac branded typewriters are the over-stock machines(?) from Nakajima since Sears quickly moved the "Manual 1" name to a segment/basket-shifted Brother JP-5 from the Nakajima carriage-shifted ones in 1975/1976. The Sears Manual 1 branded Brother JP-5's are Brother Deluxe 1613 typewriters.
Kovac Corporation (Osaka, Japan) made, or had branded, a lot of calculators in the 1970s. The Kovac brand is on a lot of Nakajima made typewriters.
The Sears Manual 1 (Nakajima) are also branded as Neckermann Brillant Supermatic typewriters.
Pictures are from random internet sources.

I like collecting past technologies such as typewriters especially the ones with special/rare typefaces. There's just something about learning how things were made (& worked) back in the day! As of MAY 2024, I'll be revamping my typewriter collection here on TWDB.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Kovac (Nakajima) M-102 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Kovac (Nakajima) Serial Number page and the Kovac (Nakajima) M-102 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
