Description:
Thanks Ted Munk for helping me nail down the date. March, 1976 (please ignore the typeface sample suggesting it's from the '80s as previously thought)
It's actually a Brother 750 or similar. It really is a good quality machine, types quite well and with great precision. The metalwork and machining and general function of the design is quite nice. It has a centrifugal/frictional tabulator brake system much like the Olympias. It has a very nice front-controlled tab set/clear lever. It has a touch control under the cover. It has a paper guide. All the features. It has a ! and 1 key. It has a rapid-spacer key that was common to these Brother designs. The case has a very snug and stable fit. The thing is a bit loud with the plastic shell and no sound insulation inside, but it's not obnoxious. Overall it's really quite a nice typewriter, no slouch at all. This one was in great shape and only needed a basic cleanup.
Typeface appears to be closer to a 10-pitch pica, but may be a tad smaller than that.

I've spent my life as a mechanical and electronics tinkerer, bikes, cars, lawnmowers, appliances, cameras, audio gear, guitars, amplifiers, and pedal steel guitars. I was trained as a typist for 2 years back in the late 70's on IBM Selectric II's. At home I recall my mother having an Olympia SM3. More recently we got our daughter a typewriter for Christmas, and that somehow sparked my own personal interest in these fine and interesting machines. Now it's a habit that just won't quit. Daily searches on Craigslist, frequent trips to antique stores & malls, garage sales, etc. It's a fun and healthy addiction.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Kmart (Brother) 300 Deluxe 12 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Kmart (Brother) Serial Number page and the Kmart (Brother) 300 Deluxe 12 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
