Description:
No. 11 in my collection is a Olympia SM9. This one is unique in that it has the wide platen, and the character set seems to be set up for European, as it has the diacritics, as well as a, o, and u with umlauts. It also has the British Pound symbol.
The cosmetics are a bit rough on this example, with worn paint, and two keycaps are damaged (the 7 and 8). Because of the European character set, it is going to be hard to find replacements. Despite the wear, it is a very smoothly operating machine. I see why the SM9s have such a high reputation amongst afficionados. I did have to adjust the height of the o and e with a soldering iron. It looks ok, but could be adjusted better if I had the correct tools.
This is the second of the typewriters bought from Alan T. when I visited him (Washington, NJ) on 5/2/2026.

Relatively new to collecting. Would like to document my collection.
Planning on sticking to full-sized American machines so I don't spend too much on fancy European portables.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Olympia SM9 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Olympia Serial Number page and the Olympia SM9 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
