Description:
My first typewriter in this era of collecting. Got it at a yard sale in 2010 for $3 with softside case and instruction book; book is slightly water-damaged, though. The type sample is with the ribbon that was in it when I got it. Researching this on the internet brought me to the typosphere, where I learned that I need more typewriters.
The reason I bought it is that it is just like one that was stolen(!) from me in the '70s. It was researching this one that led me to the typosphere and collecting. Thanks guys. (C'mon, "guys" is a non-gendered term.)

While I find all of mankind's inventions interesting, I am most enchanted by the human-scale arts and devices, the ones that can be created (and repaired) in a home workshop or studio; the ones that can be understood by looking at them; the ones that do something useful or stir admiration. Typewriters work for me.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Olympia SM8 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Olympia Serial Number page and the Olympia SM8 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
