Description:
This is a Jue Shine index typewriter from Taiwan. I acquired it in 2022 from a Taiwanese family who used it for years to produce a church newsletter.
This is the first entry of this brand on TWDB!
I found two instances of this typewriter in two museum collections, one in the US and one in Australia. Those are linked below.
The date is "72 / 7", however it is unclear whether this is in a Western or Taiwanese calendar, which would translate to either 1972 or 1983. I am leaning towards the earlier date, just based on the design of the machine, but I could be wrong.
The machine came with four boxes of less used, additional characters, in addition to an almost fully-populated main tray of characters. Unfortunately, that tray is disorganized. Each box weighs between 3.5 kg (7.7 lbs) and 4.6 kg (10 lbs). There is another box of types weighing about 3.5 kg (7.7 lbs).
The machine's platen is very large. Presumably, this is in part because the types are not curved.
The machine allow writing left to right, right to left, top to bottom, and bottom to top. You pick a character with one lever, and then you use another lever to print. Caron film ribbons such as the ones used for IBM typebar Executive machines can be used.
Basic cleaning of the machine has been done.
Stats:
- the main tray can hold 97 x 35 = 3,395 characters maximum
- each of the 4 extra boxes can hold 39 x 41 = 1,599 characters, for a total of 6,396 characters
- however, the boxes are not full, with some characters presumably on the tray
- two small boxes also hold special characters (to review)
- 361 are off the tray and need to be placed back (363 holes available in the top right corner)
TODO:
- Take better pictures! For now using a quick picture I took in 2022 as main picture (before cleaning).
- Complete the cleaning.
- Find a way to organize characters in the main tray.
UPDATES:
- 2025-02-14: the process of mapping the main tray is ongoing. More than 2,000 characters are mapped, just over 1,000 to go :)
- 2025-02-15: the main tray is now fully populated and scanned

I started collecting my first pre-WW2 standard typewriters in 2017. Since then I have added a few machines to my collection, which now ranges from the 1880s to the 1980s. As of 2024, I have more big standard (desktop) typewriters than portables, a few standard electrics, and some unusual machines like Varitypers, uncommon IBM machines, and more. I am not a pro restorer, but I have restored a few of my machines beyond simple cleaning.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Jue Shine 747L on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Jue Shine Serial Number page and the Jue Shine 747L By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
