1972 Hermes Baby Serial # 9310689 1972 Hermes Baby typewriter, Serial # 9310689 Ragnar Schliecker's 1972 Hermes Baby typewriter. 2026-01-06 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Ragnar Schliecker: 1972 Hermes Baby Serial # 9310689 The Hermes Baby is a super compact ultra portable designed by Hermes in Switzerland.
This machine has a very light touch and a responsive one at that.
It has a nice plastic body in this case: it is orange. And it's top lid (carrying case) is of the same plastic and clips on to the back and the front with a nice little click.

The typewriter has a very smooth carriage with an equally smooth carriage return lever and platen. Even though my platen is hard it still grips greatly on the paper.

For the keys you have your standard keyboard and then You have your margin release, shift and shift lock, spacebar, and backspace.
This typewriter also features a triple ribbon selector.
Instead of having a stencil mode like many other writers, this middle option in the middle of to black/blue and red actually makes the typeslug hit the center of the ribbon instead of not raising the ribbon at all.
The keys are very smooth and spring back fast, they are very light but still have a bit of travel to them. The carriage moves responsively and accurately.
It has a line space selector being able to have 1, 1/2, 2 lines. It also has an option for 0 which is Free, the platen spins freely.
The carriage lock is also on this same switch located by the carriage return lever on the left side of the carriage.

The writer also features a spring loaded paper holder and adjustable margins.

This specific model also has a cool typeface!! Techno Pica
10 Pitch

Another fun feature about the Hermes Baby is that the margin release also doubles as a typebar jam release, so if you have 2 or more typebars stuck by the front of the segment you can use this key to help release them back down.

Because the rubber feet have gone dry with age I put little rubber ones you put under wooden cutting boards and stuck them on the original so I can use it just like it was brand new!

You can get these at many hardware stores.

I am a musician from Norway
I collcet typewriters and try my best to restore them and I use them daily for everyday things like work. I love using my typewriters, as it gives off a more tactile feel and more personal feel, and when I do work related things like schoolwork it makes me write more accurately because It's harder to correct.
I recently even got gifted my first electronic from my partner! She gave me the AX-100. It is really nice for school work because it can do corrections more professionally and it appears better on scans. So for letters I use manuals and for school I use the electric.

I currectly have 5 typewriters
Brother AX-100 Electronic Typewriter..............................(2000s)
Remtor 10-60 Correction (Brother off-brand) ................(1980s)
Olympia Traveller de Luxe (Green)....................................(1970s)
Hermes Baby (Orange)......................................................(1972)
Remington Holiday.............................................................(1966)
Continental Standard.........................................................(1927)
