Description:
April 27, 2025 was an auspicious day indeed. It was a beautiful sunny spring day and I had planned to drive up to a small farm town in the Pennsylvania to pick up my Spanish keyboard Royal QDL from 1949. This Adler J5, also with *Spanish diacritics*, was available in the same little town, just a few miles away from the QDL. I figured I should make the long trip worth it and pick up two machines in one drive.
The *Italic* typeface was a complete surprise! What's better than a surprise typeface? It was also in (dare I say it) near pristine condition, save but a few eraser flakes. The only problem is that this handsome machine is stuck in its smart little case. A common problem with Adlers, or so I've read, because the rubber feet get warped around the case latch system. Someday it will break free from its case. Til then, I will use it as is, with its affixed "typewriter pad."
This is the only Adler in my collection. It is as smooth as my fully serviced Olympia SM5.
Check out the cool dealer sticker from SECO TYPEWRITER in Philadelphia, PA.

I love to write and found that writing on a typewriter is the most enjoyable and distraction-free way of doing it. I started with an Alphasmart, then moved to a Royalite, then to an Olympia SM5. The Olympia kept me fully satisfied for a good seven years until I got the bit by the collecting bug. Now I am slowly amassing my own personal typewriter museum. Typewriters are like personal printing presses. My partner is an engineer who can fix and clean any typewriter, so we make a great team.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Adler J5 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Adler Serial Number page and the Adler J5 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
