1971 Hermes 3000 Serial # 7099404 1971 Hermes 3000 typewriter, Serial # 7099404 James Grooms's 1971 Hermes 3000 typewriter. 2024-07-11 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of James Grooms: 1971 Hermes 3000 Serial # 7099404 An excellent example of the demise of the high end manual portable market. What was once a great typewriter, all be it delicate, has been reduced to nearly toy status through the use of plastics. The action is still there, but the goofy controls are the same and now enclosed in a housing seemingly designed to break.

And a prime example, this one has two of the four middle body to lower body points cracked. An attempt at JB Weld with reinforcement failed. So don't laugh, but hot glue will hold it together at least as well as the original tabs/slots. A simple slice with an exacto knife will take it apart. Then peel off and redo it. I'll leave a little note with the manual for the future typewriter archeologist.

There is a fair bit of UV discoloration on this one. I treated the spacebar so it'd be close to the switches and not knowing how the body parts would respond, let it go.

The ads are a hoot of false advertising. For the same price you could get an SM-9, housed in a metal shell with an actual case. Hmmm. Leave it to the Germans.

S6 on the Pica slugs.

As with many, the bug is back there somewhere due to an Underwood No. 5. My grandfather was on a small town school board and used one for this. My parents had a yellow Royal Safari that I used to index card everything, including a beer can collection. Collection syndrome clue! The long dormant tic was activated when my neighbors left a Remington Quiet Riter on the curb when they moved in circa 2010, Yes a believe it or not story is next, when a Hermes 3000 comes home with the girlfriend from work for free. Yes, free! From there the addiction is full steam. And yes, I now have a No. 5. Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose.
