Description:
This Royal Safari with Spencerian script was custom painted by Gerren of HotRod Typerwiter in 2024. I am the 2nd owner, having purchased it from collector Lex Nieland in California. This was the first typer I bought online, risking the shipping process. Luckily, it was packed well and arrived in perfect condition from the opposite coast. I think it's a lot of fun. Reminds me of Jackson Pollock/ abstract expressionism, and also Duke Ellington/ jazz. I followed a few of Gerren's videos and it looks like he may have transplanted Aristocrat script typebars onto the Safari machine, adding the Aristocrat badge to the back as a tribute to its donor. The typeface is beautiful, especially the lowercase "f." One mysterious thing: the paperwork it came with states that it was purchased in 1968, but the serial number on the same paperwork puts it at 1970, according to this database.

I am a librarian, artist, writer, and co-author of the book Desegregation in Northern Virginia Libraries (The History Press, 2023). If I'm working on a book or article for publication, I'm on a computer. However, I use my typewriters to create poems, type-doodles, art, and to write snail mail letters. I find the tactile nature of typing on a manual machine soothing and joyful. Each typewriter seems to have a soul and a story. Currently my collection is centered around midcentury models.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Royal Safari on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Royal Serial Number page and the Royal Safari By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
