1970 Imperial 80 Serial # 8F08490 1970 Imperial 80 typewriter, Serial # 8F08490 Nathan Scrimshaw's 1970 Imperial 80 typewriter. 2021-03-10 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Nathan Scrimshaw: 1970 Imperial 80 Serial # 8F08490 This may not be as easy to disassemble as it's predecessors but it's still very quick to pull apart and I reckon access is actually better at the end of it. Type action is great, as are the ergonomics - right down to being remarkably comfortable to pick up and carry around. If you've ever had to lug a 66 around then you'll appreciate the contoured underside of this machine. These typewriters have a poor reputation for wearing out fast, and I do see many very tired looking examples for sale. That said, despite having very shiny keys, and other tell tale signs of a long working life, this particular example feels absolutely fine and is a pleasure to use. It's my favourite machine in fact, and likely to stay with me longer than some of its more illustrious forebears.

There are just two screws on the underside at the front, plus a couple of bolts on the top of the machine at the rear (seen once you remove the carriage). Undo these and the top comes off. You can remove the base as well by undoing the screw through each of the four feet. Because it's not demountable like its predecessors it's actually a far simpler mechanism inside.

Still got the neat drawband arrangement that unhooks easily when removing the carriage

Just lift the black lever on the body as you move the carriage to the right and the drawband is unhooked from the carriage smartly and left secured on the lever instead.
