196x Underwood 18 Serial # 507389 196x Underwood 18 typewriter, Serial # 507389 John Cooper's 196x Underwood 18 typewriter. 2020-05-31 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of John Cooper: 196x Underwood 18 Serial # 507389 Manufactured by Olivetti, the Underwood 18 is closely based on the Antares line of Italian portables. However, by the time this example was manufactured, several features found on other Olivettis were included, including a margin-release key that also serves as an automatic paragraph indenter. Not as elegant as a Lettera 22, but not too far off the mark, either. Elite type. Sold in May 2020.

Olivetti serial numbers are unreliable as a method of fixing the manufacturing date. Although the Underwood 18 was introduced in 1963, I suspect this one was made later, perhaps in 1965 or 1966.
