Description:
This is my most interesting machine. Branded Singer Scholastic, but not the common Singer Scholastic! It's a rebranded Remington Holiday, still sporting the Remington colorway. From what I can tell, Singer's contract with Remington was short lived, and most units were painted Singer's color way. I've not seen another instance of a Singer Scholastic that was a rebranded Remington - they are all Royals.
Another interesting finding is that the gear on the left-side ribbon spindle was installed upside down. With that installation, the left spindle could never wind ribbon. Odd. Perhaps this was a repair person's mistake, but that seems an odd mistake. Perhaps it was manufactured wrong? Could that align with the Remington colorway, indicating an early production model? Regardless, with some work in the tight space, I managed to correct the orientation and it now winds both ways. I'm pretty stoked about that repair.
The plastic body has some cracks, the lid is missing, it's dirty and gummed up as you'd expect given the vintage, but it's all there. I love the styling and color, which to be honest is the reason I purchased this unit. Compared to my other typewriters - a 1940's Remington Rand and a 1960's Smith-Corona, it seems quite cheaply constructed with stamped steel frame and mechanisms. However, I think advances in design and manufacturing make up for those changes. It's not over-designed; it's designed to just barely do the job, which it does pretty well.

Retired software engineer, enjoying troubleshooting problems knowing the root cause is always a hardware problem. Unless it's an operator problem, of course. I currently have three, all manuals, one each from the 40's, 50's, and 60's. We'll see if I can hold it to three, but the 30's and 70's beckon.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Singer Scholastic on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Singer Serial Number page and the Singer Scholastic By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
