196X Royal Brillant Serial # 1248 196X Royal Brillant typewriter, Serial # 1248 Hein Reinders's 196X Royal Brillant typewriter. 2022-05-18 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Hein Reinders: 196X Royal Brillant Serial # 1248 Royal Brillant
Full metal machine is a black case
Acc. to Laurenz van Gaalen, the Brillant is a Royal somewhere between a Royalite 120 and a Royal Parade
The serialnumber is a bit strange with 1248 and dating is difficult. Again acc. to Laurenz, judging from the ribbon hopper, it is built after 1965.
It has a button for tab set and clear on its left and a tab-key on the right. The mechanism has a provision for another button on thee right side, see photo.
It has two colour ribbon with color selection mechanism laying flat under the machine.
There is an automatic ribbon reverse. This is a delicate mechanism in which the 'end of ribbon ring' cocks the reversing-mechanism. Any next key that is pressed, fires the reverse mechanism. This is not new to this machine but I find it clever to use the rising ribbon tension merely as a sensor and the energy of the typist to perform the actual revers-action.
There is a transport lock (my Halberg has the threaded hole for the lever, but no lever)
Its mechanical design reminds me of the Halberg. The mechanism for the CR lever is like that of the Junior.
The mounting of the housing suggests that the bare mechanics can be dressed in several suits, see picture.

As a retired product development engineer, I am fascinated by the design of electro-mechanical products in which parts move, make noise and, preferably, radiate a little heat. Most preferred are products that are operated by keys, like typewriters, accordeons and pianos.
My genetics and statistics on lifetime expectancy suggest that it is time for me to let you know about the fantastic design, product engineering and manuacturing skills of the generation before mine. I salute mr. Munk for the opportunity that he has created for me to show it to the world. Okay, a bit bombastic.
