Description:
The product brochure (in Japanese) which accompanies this typewriter states that this was a product of research since 1935. This 4.5-kg typewriter was produced by the International Business Machine Industry Co. Ltd. in Omori, Ota-ku, Tokyo, Japan. No date is stated as to when exactly this came out of the factory floor, however. This particular one has a problem with its carriage, when typing, the paper begins to move at an angle,as seen in the typeface sample.

I'm an archaeologist who writes heritage books and collects Japanese ceramics as well as quite a number of typewriters that I've acquired through purchase or as gifts over the last 10 years in the Philippines as well as in the US and Japan.
I'm currently a visiting professor at a university in Japan and it is heaven here to see so many typewriters being auctioned online!
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Atlas (Nippo) Portable on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Atlas (Nippo) Serial Number page and the Atlas (Nippo) Portable By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
