1968 Sears Celebrity Electric Serial # 6LG=108627 1968 Sears Celebrity Electric typewriter, Serial # 6LG=108627 James Grooms's 1968 Sears Celebrity Electric typewriter. 2025-03-29 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of James Grooms: 1968 Sears Celebrity Electric Serial # 6LG=108627 A great Smith-Corona, essentially a copy of a gen 2 Electra 120, uglified for Sears. First ad 1968 and the closeouts in 1972. Sometimes the ads are as it is on the machine, "Celebrity Electric" and others times it is "Celebrity Electric 12."

So how did S-C sell the idea to their long term dealers in big markets that one could simply go to Sears or Montgomery Wards and buy a Smith Corona? In the case of this example, Sears has the older gen two Electra 120 without a dedicated power space button and half space on the space bar. And while it is just a hunch, I think they made them ugly on purpose or shall we say utility looking versus the stylized Smith Corona six series.

This was low mileage example that required a simple service and some detail with a bit of UV treatment to the carriage side covers. Still running on the original belts without too much thump.

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to anyone area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Sears Celebrity Electric on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Sears Serial Number page and the Sears Celebrity Electric By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
