Description:
This is a substantial typewriter. It looks like it should be an electric but it is manual. I can't say how well it works, though, because the mechanism is either rusted or gunked or both and has not yet responded to my efforts to help.
It’s big and plain and it doesn’t do anything that 20 other of my typewriters don’t do, so why bother? For the challenge and satisfaction.

While I find all of mankind's inventions interesting, I am most enchanted by the human-scale arts and devices, the ones that can be created (and repaired) in a home workshop or studio; the ones that can be understood by looking at them; the ones that do something useful or stir admiration. Typewriters work for me.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Royal 440 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Royal Serial Number page and the Royal 440 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
