1968 Olympia Monica Serial # 3527818 1968 Olympia Monica typewriter, Serial # 3527818 Elisa Makoon-Singh's 1968 Olympia Monica typewriter. 2025-11-13 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Elisa Makoon-Singh: 1968 Olympia Monica Serial # 3527818 I hunted this one down in Cádiz, España in 2025 after pining for over a year.

Picture it: Spain in the summer of 2024. This was around the time I decided that I needed to start collecting typewriters (after being a one typewriter gal for seven years) and specifically, I wanted to collect Spanish keyboard layouts. I found a lovely lady named Josefina on an online marketplace and she had 4 typewriters for sale: a Maritsa 30, an Olivetti Lettera 12, an Underwood Antares Compact 16, and this Olympia. In 2024, I went for the first two. I was a newbie. The Maritsa was missing its return lever and some may know that the Lettera 12 uses an obsolete ribbon cartridge.

I was getting ready to go back to Spain for the summer of 2025, a friend suggested that I reach out to Josefina again to see if, by chance, she still had the Olympia. I remember that I passed on it for the silly reason that I already had an Olympia - an SM5 with English QWERTY. Long story short (too late) she STILL had both typewriters from the year prior and of course I had to salvage them both.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. She was rusty on the outside, but her internals looked to be in good shape, and none of the keys stuck. I knew this one would clean up nicely and was the perfect candidate for a professional paint job.

Isn't she lovely?

Fresh paint job! I took great care in packing this careless machine up and sending it across the country for a proper paint refresh and she made it home safely.

I love to write and found that writing on a typewriter is the most enjoyable and distraction-free way of doing it. I started with an Alphasmart, then moved to a Royalite, then to an Olympia SM5. The Olympia kept me fully satisfied for a good seven years until I got the bit by the collecting bug. Now I am slowly amassing my own personal typewriter museum. Typewriters are like personal printing presses. My partner is an engineer who can fix and clean any typewriter, so we make a great team.
