1968 Hermes 3000 Serial # 3508079 1968 Hermes 3000 typewriter, Serial # 3508079 Lawrence Cardella's 1968 Hermes 3000 typewriter. 2024-08-18 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Lawrence Cardella: 1968 Hermes 3000 Serial # 3508079 My absolute favorite manual machine for longer typing sessions. These do live up to the hype. Typing experience is so smooth and creamy, the keys are so responsive and cupped to invite your fingertips. I got this German model for a steal from a local seller for $150 in mint condition. Just needed a new ribbon. The only downside is it didn’t come with the clamshell case top. The previous owner did make a custom case for it although with the frequency I use this baby, it’s almost always out of the case.

I grew up with a fascination and deep appreciation for mechanical business machines. Mid-century typewriters, cash registers and adding machines. To appreciate the magic of these devices and the synergy of gears, springs and levers working together in perfect harmony is quite beautiful and an understated marvel of engineering and quality workmanship that has produced products that work exactly as intended for decades and even a century after they were produced. This is something that doesn’t exist in today’s world. My small collection (currently 14) consists of mainly portables, ultra-portables and a few Smith Corona 6 series electrics, which I use for amateur writing projects.
