Description:
Yet another antique shop find. A 1968 plastic bodied Tippa S in fair condition and with a nice clean typeface. I probably paid a little too much for this, but I wanted another post-war West German machine for my collection.
Many of the leavers were stiff and not returning to rest after pressing the keys. so I did my usual clean up of the segment and achieved a degree of success, but I struggled with the levers at the centre of the segment, 6,7, y, h, b - particularly the h. I cleaned the levers and the segment slots and also found a compression spring on the base tray which I though had something to do with the lack of return of the h lever.
I could see 'scuffing' on the troublesome levers and eventually resorted to the fairly brutal idea of very carefully 'easing' the slots in the segment with a small screwdriver. This seemed to help, but easing one lever made the others bind. Eventually I found a compromise that allows all the levers to work. Overall, it's still a bit sluggish, but it is work in progress.
Awaiting a new ribbon, so the typeface specimen is a bit faint and the type slugs still need to be cleaned, although they don't look too bad.
And the loose spring I found, maybe it’s a biro spring rather than being part of the typewriter?

Retired Air Traffic Controller. Got my first typewriter from Santa when I was about 8 years old and woke my parents up at 3am as I just had to try it out when I woke up! Have had an old Imperial 58 in the family for longer than I can remember. A computer geek, but I just love the mechanics of typewriters and have started to collect a few more to keep the Imperial company!
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Adler Tippa S on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Adler Serial Number page and the Adler Tippa S By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
