1967 Underwood Touchmaster Five Serial # II-9901190 1967 Underwood Touchmaster Five typewriter, Serial # II-9901190 Mark Petersen's 1967 Underwood Touchmaster Five typewriter. 2015-11-15 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Mark Petersen: 1967 Underwood Touchmaster Five Serial # II-9901190 Purchased for $145 from Charlottesville Office Machine Company, a gracious birthday gift from my parents.
I believe I am the first owner of this machine because it is in brand new condition, even a perfectly smooth platen! The man who sold it to me told me he had been an Underwood dealer back in the day, and when I spied a small cluster of TM-5s in the back corner he told me had "two or three" of those but there were five (so I figure he hadn't noticed them himself for a while). The dust cover looks like it could have been made yesterday.
The machine performs extremely well but I do not enjoy the touch and seldom use this machine anymore now that I have standards I much prefer. Still a really cool thing to have a totally new machine. Check out the linked blog to see a close up of the platen.
