Description:
Got this at my own yard sale when one visitor overheard me talking to another one about typewriters, and offered this one. It cleaned up nicely and the troublesome heavy touch and sluggish tabbing system responded well to attention, making this a very nice usable typewriter.
Royal office machines are solid!
There is a lot of empty space inside; this Royal 440 doesnât have to be so big. Speculating that the space is planned for a carbon film ribbon system. Does anyone know whether it was produced?

While I find all of mankind's inventions interesting, I am most enchanted by the human-scale arts and devices, the ones that can be created (and repaired) in a home workshop or studio; the ones that can be understood by looking at them; the ones that do something useful or stir admiration. Typewriters work for me.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Royal 440 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Royal Serial Number page and the Royal 440 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
