1967 Olivetti-Underwood 21 Serial # 702956 1967 Olivetti-Underwood 21 typewriter, Serial # 702956 Michael Hoehne's 1967 Olivetti-Underwood 21 typewriter. 2020-08-30 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Michael Hoehne: 1967 Olivetti-Underwood 21 Serial # 702956 with fabric-covered wooden case with key; made in Barcelona. See the pic and its note in the gallery about crossed key linkages. In every typewriter I have noticed, the links follow straight back from the keys to the typebars in a 1-to-1 left-to-right correspondence but in both examples of this Olivetti Underwood 21 that I have seen, the E and the X links are crossed. Why? To check yours, lift up several typebars in the neighborhood of the X and E slugs.

This is a pic of a curious arrangement of crossed linkages, the X and the E keys, in an Olivetti-Underwood 21. Why is this done this way? Some engineer screwed up?

While I find all of mankind's inventions interesting, I am most enchanted by the human-scale arts and devices, the ones that can be created (and repaired) in a home workshop or studio; the ones that can be understood by looking at them; the ones that do something useful or stir admiration. Typewriters work for me.
