Description:
with fabric-covered wooden case with key; made in Barcelona. See the pic and its note in the gallery about crossed key linkages. In every typewriter I have noticed, the links follow straight back from the keys to the typebars in a 1-to-1 left-to-right correspondence but in both examples of this Olivetti Underwood 21 that I have seen, the E and the X links are crossed. Why? To check yours, lift up several typebars in the neighborhood of the X and E slugs.

While I find all of mankind's inventions interesting, I am most enchanted by the human-scale arts and devices, the ones that can be created (and repaired) in a home workshop or studio; the ones that can be understood by looking at them; the ones that do something useful or stir admiration. Typewriters work for me.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Olivetti-Underwood 21 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Olivetti-Underwood Serial Number page and the Olivetti-Underwood 21 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
