1967 Hermes Rocket Serial # 9086492 1967 Hermes Rocket typewriter, Serial # 9086492 Suzanne LaPierre's 1967 Hermes Rocket typewriter. 2026-05-30 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Suzanne LaPierre: 1967 Hermes Rocket Serial # 9086492 I purchased this Hermes Rocket from Xavier Professor Richard Polt, author of The Typewriter Revolution. It previously belonged to Professor Jerry Craddock of UC Berkeley's Department of Spanish and Portuguese. It came with a note indicating that Craddock gifted it to Polt in 2010. It has a Greek keyboard with Roman capital letters. As an added bonus, it's my birth year typewriter - made in 1967.

Update: I 3D printed a replacement right knob (thanks to the public library, which will 3D print parts for free - and to the designer who put a file on Thingiverse.com). Shortly after replacing the missing right knob, the left knob cracked! So, I am working on gluing that back together. I put a new ribbon in. I am impressed at what a snappy little typer this is!

These are the two machines I bought from Richard Polt when he downsized his collection in May 2026: a 1960 Olympia SF and a 1967 Hermes Rocket with Greek keyboard and Roman capitals.

Hermes mercifully put the serial number right under the ribbon cover!

I am a librarian, artist, writer, and co-author of the book Desegregation in Northern Virginia Libraries (The History Press, 2023). If I'm working on a book or article for publication, I'm on a computer. However, I use my typewriters to create poems, type-doodles, and to write snail mail letters. The tactile nature of typing on a manual machine works some kind of detox magic in this digital age. Each vintage typewriter has a soul and a story. Currently my collection is centered around midcentury models.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Hermes Rocket on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Hermes Serial Number page and the Hermes Rocket By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
