1967 Adler J4 Serial # 3876131 1967 Adler J4 typewriter, Serial # 3876131 Greg Mattesen's 1967 Adler J4 typewriter. 2025-02-04 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Greg Mattesen: 1967 Adler J4 Serial # 3876131 I really like Adler typewriters from the '60s. I like the feel of typing on them, and the carriage returns are so smooth. I found this J4 at a local antiques shop in December 2023 and brought it home to clean it up and get it working well. On this one, the most glaring issue was that the pin on the ribbon drive gear that engages with the ribbon spool was snapped off on each side (the gear and pin are plastic). I repaired it by drilling a small hole in the drive gear and installing a small metal roll pin. Unlike my Adler J3, this J4 featured a segment shift. Plastic-bodied, but it still had a good heavy feel to it. The carrying case is a nightmare: not only does the typewriter tend to get hung up on the rubber bushings that hold it in the case, but trying to put the top of the cover on the bottom always seems much harder than it has to be.

Sold December 2023.

I "accidentally" started collecting typwriters in the fall of 2020. After my daughter got one cheap at a junk shop, and hearing that she intended to use it to write some old fashioned snail-mail letters to friends, I decided to get "a" typewriter myself to do the same. The first one was a real lucky break: a pristine 1950 Smith-Corona Sterling in perfect condition. From there I got interested in other brands and in refurbishing dirty and forgotten machines. I've had 65+ typewriters at this point, passing many along to excited new owners to keep my collection hovering around 20 machines.
