Description:
This is a good workhorse of the typewriter. I got it from ebay for $60 (with shipping incl). The keyboard feel is somewhat stiff, although I have oiled everything and the keys are working freely. Actually, I can type faster on this than on any of my other manual typers. I think the retraction springs are stiffer and so it pulls the typebars back faster so they don't jam as easily. It makes a very high quality print with nice, straight lines. It is a bit noisy.

The pounding typebar, having writ, moves on... unless there's a ding.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Underwood Touchmaster Five on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Underwood Serial Number page and the Underwood Touchmaster Five By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
