Description:
The bottom of the Sears catalog barrel. There's a reason they didn't carry them for long. The QDL needed to be retired. Instead they kept cutting costs on it and throwing funky bodywork on it.
This machine, although there are no dents, was bumped hard. The escape was out, and the dreaded forming was required. The carriage is wobbly, so I spit balled side to side by listening to the snap. The vibrator was a mess. I swapped in a Heritage bit with a modified spring, so it loads a ribbon fast. The card guide thing, which serves as the paper bail/holder, was broken. I superglued it.
Cut your losses and call it a day because even the case queens are just ok performance wise.

Typewriters are the perfect blend of using one's technical skills, history and functional purpose. My goal is type tested machines. My interests are not isolated to any one area. For example, I am a big fan of Smith Corona electrics, mid century electrics and all things Royal.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Sears Portable on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Sears Serial Number page and the Sears Portable By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
