Description:
A Sears branded Smith Corona, this portable is a fine machine that types very well and has good, snappy key response. The bell is also the most unique I have heard on any typewriter. It’s more of a “dong” than a “ding” - almost doorbell-like. I bought this online and minus a small, unnoticeable broken/missing piece under the spacebar, it is nearly mint, including the body and platen. I like finding these department-store, branded units made by top manufacturers of the era. You can usually get them for a better price point and they have some unique features.

I grew up with a fascination and deep appreciation for mechanical business machines. Mid-century typewriters, cash registers and adding machines. To appreciate the magic of these devices and the synergy of gears, springs and levers working together in perfect harmony is quite beautiful and an understated marvel of engineering and quality workmanship that has produced products that work exactly as intended for decades and even a century after they were produced. This is something that doesn’t exist in today’s world. My small collection (currently 14) consists of mainly portables, ultra-portables and a few Smith Corona 6 series electrics, which I use for amateur writing projects.
