1966 Royal 660 Serial # 13-8464645 1966 Royal 660 typewriter, Serial # 13-8464645 Kyle Oelofse's 1966 Royal 660 typewriter. 2019-10-28 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Kyle Oelofse: 1966 Royal 660 Serial # 13-8464645 This 53lb monster appeared on eBay one day and I won it for $9 with no competition. It has a similar aesthetic design to Royal's 5xx series of typewriters, except for the curvy 590. I assume the insides are similar as well, but I don't know what changed to warrant the start of a whole new number series.

The seller purchased this 660 from a New York YWCA that was shutting down in 1976. He expected to use it but it wound up relegated to a closet for over forty years until he decided to sell it in 2018.

The particular 660 pictured here has a few broken body panel mounts (the little teeth where screws hold the body panels in place), but enough are intact that it can sit normally. It also takes several tries to print some characters, but with enough attempts is able to produce a full type sample.

This 660 appears to be the first Royal 6xx series typewriter in the database. I've seen one other black one on Google Images when searching for more information, and I believe there's at least one more in the Brumfield collection. More photos are to come as cleaning and repairs progress (very slowly...).

UPDATE 201910: This typewriter is painted "Tahitian Beige". Thanks Ian! Type sample to come soon. Year of manufacture corrected from 1969 to 1966.

I inherited two Royal KMMs as a kid. Over a decade later I started actively collecting and repairing in 2015 shortly after discovering the existence of "weird" typewriters like the Blickensderfer and Hammond, and finding a destroyed Super Sterling to experiment on.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Royal 660 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Royal Serial Number page and the Royal 660 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
