1966 Olympia SM9 Serial # 3069296 1966 Olympia SM9 typewriter, Serial # 3069296 Cole Ehmke's 1966 Olympia SM9 typewriter. 2024-02-05 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Cole Ehmke: 1966 Olympia SM9 Serial # 3069296 Found in Laramie, Wyoming in about 2018. Immaculately clean. Action is lively and responsive. Paint is excellent. I would say that the platen is semi-hard. The serial number dates it to 1966. There is a divot on the space bar perhaps from a scrape? and wrinkles which are part of a couple keys -- perhaps from when they were made? Or off gassing?

Olympias are known for their light touch, durability and careful engineering so they are suitable for either casual or intensive use. This one is a handsome and fully functional machine from the pinnacle of manual typewriters -- it's ready for many years of first class typing.

Apart from the usual plethora of SM9 features, this typewriter's QWERTY keyboard has two keys for international/multilingual typing (French/Spanish) -- a key with accents (in the top left of the keyboard) and another key with special letters (the cédille (ç) and a circumflex accent (^) in the lower right). It also has a key with brackets ([]). A thoughtful feature is that the accent key is dead (won't advance) -- the idea is to type the accent first, then the letter (after which the carriage would advance as normal).

The case is clean and sturdy with signs of light use. The typewriter latches firmly to the case.
