Description:
Great condition Hermes 3000 model (possibly 1966?), missing right-side knob, purchased via eBay some years back (2016 or 17). Although it was packaged quite lightly (as I recall, with no wrapping whatsoever, simply put into its hard-shelled case and stuffed in a USPS box), it miraculously arrived in good working condition, ready to roll.
I'm not sure whether the ribbon is original, but it does still have good life left in it, so I've been using the one it originally came with thus far. The biggest issue, which took me an embarrassingly long time to diagnose (especially since the fix was so simple) was that the margins appeared to be jammed in the middle of the machine. I wasn't sure how to reset them, since there are no margin sliders on this machine. Once a friend pointed me to a Reddit post with a helpful photo (indicating that the directions in the missing manual were incorrect, and that one must push on both the green button AND the silver tab at the side of the machine simultaneously), the margins were quickly reset and all is well! Now my only complaint is that the machine appears to have developed some difficulty in retaining the spacing between lines (as seen in the typeface specimen). I'm not sure if this means the platen isn't gripping the paper properly or if something is wrong with the return carriage lever; further investigation is required as of 2/16/2021.
This machine is quite well preserved, and seems to have no dents or scratches (save for the lid of the case), except for some minor scuffing around the front corners. Someone has also scratched "F0736150" into the back of the machine, which does not correlate with the serial number, so perhaps this was an office identifier at some point?
The case also contains the original cleaning tools, a brush for dusting and a scraper which has ink only on one side of it, suggesting it was lightly used for its intended purpose.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Hermes 3000 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Hermes Serial Number page and the Hermes 3000 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
