1964 Smith Corona Classic Serial # 5X 146978 1964 Smith Corona Classic typewriter, Serial # 5X 146978 Daniel Deary's 1964 Smith Corona Classic typewriter. 2023-09-14 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Daniel Deary: 1964 Smith Corona Classic Serial # 5X 146978 My first three diamond 5X series Smith Corona that allegedly is an updated version of a Silent Super. Got it off Craigslist but it was dirty and the keys were sticking. Once cleaned it performed superbly . This unit has no centering lever but most Classics have that feature. The bell is diminutive and is not loud like my 5AX Sterling. The basket/vibrator with 2 screws is very much like the Silent Super. Another difference from the early 5 series is that the 5A and 5AX models do have a plastic tiered drawband pully like the 6 series typers (Note: I have never had any issues with this type of pully in any of the 5A and 5AX, and 6 series typewriters).

Note the small bell. This differs from the 5AX Sterling which has a much bigger and louder bell.

Retired. Have been a Photography geek for many years...old school film. Also have been an audiophile and have been collecting vinyl before it became fashionable. Accidently(?) began collecting typewriters in the early1980's...I had four by 2006. After I inherited my mothers Hermes 3000 in 2017 my interest really took off and now I have 28 typewriters in total. The majority of my collection are Smith Corona's largely because they are plentiful, easy to work on and are very good typers.

RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Smith Corona Classic on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Smith Corona Serial Number page and the Smith Corona Classic By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
