Description:
My first FB Mktplace acquisition, and from a neighbor no less. Immediately had issues with keys sticking so I found a typewriter repair person and brought it to have it cleaned / tuned up. When I brought it home and started typing, the "t" slug flew off and across the room. So - found another Classic 12 for sale locally, although it was from the 1970s and completely different typeface. I replaced the whole typebar with the help of Just My Typewriter and of course Phoenix Typewriter video tutorials. It was a journey I was happy to finish, but ecstatic that I accomplished. It's a beautiful machine. Yes, the "t" is noticeably different, but I am making my peace with it. Her name is Gretchen.

I have loved pressing buttons since I was little. I have memories of playing with the buttons on my grandma's Princess telephone, and watching her fingers with her long red-painted nails fly over her Selectric. I wanted to use it so badly! Also, my grandpa's adding machine. THAT we were only allowed to touch supervised. Now I'm collecting typewriters in all sorts of conditions and enjoying learning how to fix them. I haved fixed alignment issues, replaced a typeslug (ugh) and solved some other minor problems with the helpful feedback and videos of those that have come before me. My first was a 1964 Smith-Corona Classic 12 (so sharp looking), my rarest (I think?) is a 1972 Montgomery Ward Escort 55 in canary yellow. Mostly type letters. I try to practice my typing once a day.
RESEARCH NOTE: When researching the Smith Corona Classic 12 on a computer with lots of screen real estate, you may find that launching the Smith Corona Serial Number page and the Smith Corona Classic 12 By Model/Year/Serial page in new browser windows can give you interesting perspectives on changes throughout the model series.
