1964 Royal Empress Serial # MCS 13-7885222 1964 Royal Empress typewriter, Serial # MCS 13-7885222 Michael Hoehne's 1964 Royal Empress typewriter. 2021-02-18 From the Virtual Typewriter Collection of Michael Hoehne: 1964 Royal Empress Serial # MCS 13-7885222 Oh, yes, the carriage return lever is broken off. It seems like it was made to be replaceable, so maybe somebody will find a cache of them someday. Or, you know, 3D print.
NOTE: The good news is that a carriage return lever from a Royal 440 is a drop-in fit, using only 2 circlips on each typewriter. It doesn’t look quite so imposing as the original lever but now you can use it and it won’t break. See notes in the gallery below.

The MCS serial number indicates a “Special” font, but this is 10 characters per inch (pica,”P”), so maybe what is special is the several math characters.

86 characters, including many math/logic symbols---so many that they had to give up some common punctuation symbols: there is no Apostrophe (”Inconceivable!”) and so no way to make an Exclamation Point either; no Semicolon, but at least we can colon-backspace-comma; and for a hidden bonus, we can alternate the Because symbol with the Therefore symbol to make the Check Protector character.

It works well, of course, since it’s a Royal design.

While I find all of mankind's inventions interesting, I am most enchanted by the human-scale arts and devices, the ones that can be created (and repaired) in a home workshop or studio; the ones that can be understood by looking at them; the ones that do something useful or stir admiration. Typewriters work for me.
